Why Vegan, 10-Free Nail Polish Is the Future

Five peach BarBella Co. polish bottles on a round mirrored tray with glass beakers and a botanical leaf drawing. Clean, vegan, 10-free nail polish.

Why is vegan, 10-free nail polish the future? Because more and more of us are reading labels. We already care about what we put in our bodies, and now we care about what goes on them too. Nails are no exception.

Why vegan, 10-free polish is winning

  • 10-free formulas: made without the 10 ingredients of most concern in conventional polish. See the full list in What Does 10-Free Mean?
  • Cruelty-free: no animal testing and no animal-derived ingredients, like the carmine (from insects) or guanine (from fish scales) found in some conventional shades.
  • Kinder to the planet: fewer harsh ingredients going down the drain every time you remove your color. More on that in The Environmental Truth of Vegan Nail Care.
  • Healthier nails: helps avoid the brittleness, peeling, and discoloration linked to harsh formulas.

How to spot a truly clean, vegan polish

We get it: not every store carries BarBella Co, so here's how to spot a truly clean, vegan polish anywhere. Plenty of brands now sell a "vegan" shade or two, but far fewer formulate every product with the wearer in mind from start to finish. When you shop, look for:

  • A "free-from" number on the label. 10-free, 12-free, or 15-free tells you how many ingredients the brand left out. Check which ones, since the lists vary from brand to brand.
  • A real cruelty-free certification. Leaping Bunny is the gold standard, and BarBella Co is Leaping Bunny Certified. A cute bunny drawn by a marketing team doesn't count.
  • A short, readable ingredient list. The easier to pronounce, the better!
  • "Vegan" on the whole routine, not just the color. Base coats and top coats count too.

What about gel polish?

Gel has one more ingredient to watch: HEMA, a common cause of gel polish allergies. Every BarBella Co gel polish is HEMA-free as well as 10-free, so you get two to three weeks of wear without it. Want long-lasting results at home? Our at-home manicure guide walks you through it.
